Job Description:

The City of Newton is now accepting applications for Chief of Police.

Applications can be obtained at Newton City Hall, located at 108 N. Van Buren St., Newton, Illinois.  Please return with resume attached.  Deadline to apply will be 5:00 PM on Friday, September 13, 2024.  The City of Newton deems the following characteristics and duties essential for the Office of the Chief of Police:

  • Must have at least ten (10) years of law enforcement experience.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of progressively responsible supervisory and administrative law enforcement experience.
  • Assume full management responsibility for all department services and activities, including law enforcement, crime prevention and crime suppression programs.
  • Oversee and assist the Sergeant and Corporal with scheduling and supervision of patrol officers and their assignments and prescribed duties.
  • Within the city policy, establish appropriate service and staffing levels.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate assigned personnel. Work with employees to correct deficiencies.  Implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures.
  • Represent the Police Department and support a positive working relationship with other departments, elected officials, outside agencies and police union.
  • Cooperate with Local, State and Federal law enforcement and school officials within the local school district.
  • Coordinate programs and events with all city departments.
  • Attend and participate in group meetings.
  • Direct and assist with investigation of major crimes, accidents or other unusual incidents.
  • Manage the development and implementation of community policing philosophy and its goals.
  • Prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Oversee and participate in the development of the yearly department budget.
  • Enforce local Ordinance violations.
  • Must be knowledgeable of FOIA Rules and Regulations. Will be responsible for responding to requests.
  • Be knowledgeable to new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement.
  • Continue with training and education as necessary.
  • Must be able to multitask and have good time management skills.
  • Perform any and all other related duties required.
  • Must reside within a 9-mile radius of the City of Newton.
