Job Description:
Under basic supervision, the candidate will operate, maintain, and perform preventative maintenance on City pumps, wells, tanks, water treatment facilities, and related equipment. The candidate, will also perform duties relating to water quality, including water quality sampling, cross connection control programs, and data collection. Responsibilities:
- Inspect, operate, test, and maintain a variety of water well and pumping equipment, water storage facilities, and water treatment plant facilities, including pumps, telemetry system, emergency systems, pipe systems, water storage tanks, chemicals and equipment associated with water treatment, and pressure vessels
- Ability to maintain water utility mains and services
- Ability to excavate, grade and shore up trenches for installation or maintenance of water mains
- Ability to tap pipelines and install or repair valves, hydrants, meters and pipes
- Ability to set new water meters, read water meters and record readings
- Ability to perform emergency trouble work
- Ability to troubleshoot problems in the water plant and water system and perform maintenance when it is required
- Clean and flush the water system and respond to customer water quality inquiries
- Utilize computer software programs competently
Minimum Requirements:
- Highschool Diploma or Equivalent
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted Illinois driver’s license
- Must be able to obtain at minimum an Illinois Class “B” CDL within 1 year of hire date
- Must obtain and maintain an IEPA Class D Water “Operator in Training” License within 1 year of hire date
- Ability to work independently or with other department employees
- Must be able to operate light and heavy equipment
- The successful candidate must be dependable, safety-conscious, and willing to work in a team-oriented environment.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed in outdoor and indoor environments. Candidate shall be exposed to conditions normal to geographical area. Physical demands consist of sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and crouching; using hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and lifting and carrying moderately heavy objects up to 100 pounds. The candidate must have the stamina to work long hours and overtime during evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as required.
