Job Description:
The City is seeking a dependable and motivated individual to join our team as a Wastewater Plant Operator. This position is responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the wastewater treatment system and related facilities. Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Good working knowledge of computers
- Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment, machinery, and servicing requirements
- Ability to learn wastewater pumping and treatment processes, including laboratory analysis procedures
- Ability to inspect machinery and equipment in operation and identify operational issues or defects
- Ability to accurately read meters and charts and maintain operational records
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in high-pressure situations
- Physical strength and agility necessary to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions
- Valid Illinois CDL with air brake endorsement required
- Must obtain an Illinois EPA Class 4 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification within 18 months of employment
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work under the direct supervision of the Sewer Plant Department Head
- Monitor and record the performance of equipment, gauges, and charts at the wastewater treatment plant and lift stations
- Collect samples, perform process testing, and evaluate results to ensure proper plant operation
- Clean bar screens and pump raw, primary, and secondary sludge as needed
- Assist with maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment equipment and systems
- Inspect, lubricate, and maintain motors, pumps, screens, gauges, meters, and related equipment
- Treat sludge with chemicals in accordance with operational procedures
- Remove floating solids from settling tanks and dispose of solids from bar screens
- Conduct operational efficiency testing on pumps, screens, meters, settling tanks, and related equipment
- Check flow meter charts, digesters, and pumps for proper operation
- Maintain plant facilities and equipment in a safe and orderly condition
- Perform general maintenance duties including painting, mowing lawns, sweeping floors, and maintaining cleanliness of facilities and grounds
- Perform other related duties as assigned
